Re: lets see your gaming setup!
Is it me or has only the CPU turbo value changed to 4.2?
Also did you start the overclock with undervolting first?
1,25 V seems a bit on the high side for a 3.4 normal / 4.2 turbo clock?

If you need a guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBEeXajbG2o

Re: lets see your gaming setup!
Well my chip is a 1150 haswell so slightly different

The idea of overclocking turbo mode and not the raw core is this

When it is not at full load it will draw less power (saving money, lower temps) by going down to a low mhz. most of the time my CPU will sit at 800mhz. When it is at 90% load it will generally do 3.4Ghz

When its time for the cpu to do some serious work it will then really tap into what it needs from the set voltages. I checked the voltages and they are considered safe for this type of CPU. With my 212x cooler im basically under 70deg at full load which is also a very safe temp

If you use adaptive voltages the MB will try and be smart and give you CPU way to much volts at full load and half a decent amount at small loads. Usually boards throw way to much at full load when using adaptive volts so thats out of the question. So manually setting medium to low risk volts seemed ok. The silicon lottery usually means most chips sold out of the box can do a bit more, with each result varying from not a lot to loads. Boards also get rolled out with low risk volts when things can generally use a bit more depending on your silicon lottery earnings. Its the same with GPU's. Everything you buy is basically set to "You lost the lottery" so you have to try and find out what you won by doing a few scratch cards.

what i did notice was that i was still running x35 CPU Ring BUS yet my clock goes up to x42

So i added a tiny bit more voltage to the ring BUS (v0.5) and changed the multiplier to 42 to get 1:1 ratio. It was unstable. I dropped it to 41 and got it stable

Now when it needs to do just a tiny bit of work it will start at 4100mhz and go to 4200Mhz at full load

Now here is the latest benchmark from 3D mark

Re: lets see your gaming setup!
As you can see, modding the ring bus with a haswell chip is a way to get it to run 1:1 ratio so there are less steps between low loads and turbo modes

unfortunatley i could get it at 1:1

x42 CPU core
x41 CPU ring bus

results at low load

keeping the ring bus low can allow you more stability, less temps and higher clocks however more steps till it starts "pumping"

Re: lets see your gaming setup!
Yeah stock MOBO settings are shit indeed.
Somethimes they throw insane amount of volts on the CPU when you are doing something like gaming.

I think you are mixing up 2 things tho, being the volts and the watts part.

The amount of volts you set determines the temp of the cpu, thats why the lower the cooler it will be.
Leaving it at stock will make it run to hot than actually needed in most cases.
Thats why you want to find where its lowest volts are and the rig runs stable to keep the temps down (undervolting).

The amount of watts only come in when the system is being used heavily when gaming or benching.
Its the same as with a 1000 watt PSU, thats not constantly drawing 1000 watts either now is it? ;)
It just CAN supply that much if needed.

ALso here is where my logic gets twisted:
you: 4,2 ghz in turbo mode @ 1,2 volts constantly
me: 4,2 ghz constantly @ 1,16 volts constantly
This while your CPU is the more power efficient one, yet its set to higher volts even in idle.
Do you see my point?

And yes i know your CPU is different than mine but the basics of undervolting are the same,
and since yours is more power efficient it should be able to run alot lower on the volts tbh.

My CPU actually clocks down in idle as well but not as much as the hasswell does tho:

I do have the turbo voltage stuff on auto tho, since my volts are set to the lowest to be stable so it does make sence to give it a bit more when being used.
Still we are talking about a 0.04 vlts extra.

In the end whatever (you think) works best for you is the way to go tho.
It's ur rig in the end :)

at stock volts it wouldnt start with turbo @ 4.0Ghz

The volts were a must to get it booting as during boot its at 100% load trying to fire the machine up. I always try go for lowest volt to Ghz ratio. My aim was to see how many GHZ i could get at under 70deg @ full load, and if i was at 65deg i would throw a few more volts at the core and bump some mhz into it. Turns out it was 4.2 (stable)

I was able to get 4.4Ghz, but it wouldnt be stable for long without more volts, but it ran to hot for my goals.

At 1.16volts @ your 4.2 core, what temps do you get when running Prime95? I wonder how much extra your turbo mode kicks off.

My uncore (equivelent to your 4.2Ghz constant) is set at 4.0Ghz now since messing with the CPU bus multiplier

Theres prolly more i can learn about overclocking haswell, i just used IntelGods quick and dirty guide to 4.4Ghz. Seems most people are just bumping the turbo modes with haswell, so i followed them. i will look more into it tonight

at the end of the day if we both go in and set MB volts manually, we have basically turned off the power saving ability of the chips on purpose. Mine and your chips could really go into a low state of power if we left the bloody things alone haha

its fairly safe to throw 1.3volts at a haswell i5 from what i gather, it really comes down to cooling. Haswell require more volts for more Ghz than your chip i believe. But the 1150pin and the dynamics of the chip give 5% better performance "just because its a bit newer" - so in the end they probably run very close next to each other

Re: lets see your gaming setup!
I'm not giving up tho lol
I found this with the exact same CPU you have where they run 3,8 Ghz @ 1.002 volts (!.
http://www.overclock3d.net/articles/c ... ndervolt_your_cpu_vcore/1

Can you see why i feel your volts are out of place? :)

EDIT: added temps from prime 95:

As you can see the hottest core only hits 61C.
Git yer volts down! :D

1.25 is has well unfortunately

Its a hotter chip by design

Its power saving step downs and SEA levels are great when not under load but in an OC scenario ever dog and his mother use 1.25 or more

Re: lets see your gaming setup!
I read a bit of that topic and im glad i haven't gone for hasswell then tbh.
I guess both have theri pro's and cons in the end then.

Re: lets see your gaming setup!
Good news Webley, the micro-stutter fix should be out soon. 14.1 Beta is due any day now, what with BF4 being updated to include Mantle (which only works with 14.1).

Hopefully it makes the dual GPU setup worth all the trouble.
