Yeah stock MOBO settings are shit indeed.
Somethimes they throw insane amount of volts on the CPU when you are doing something like gaming.
I think you are mixing up 2 things tho, being the volts and the watts part.
The amount of volts you set determines the temp of the cpu, thats why the lower the cooler it will be.
Leaving it at stock will make it run to hot than actually needed in most cases.
Thats why you want to find where its lowest volts are and the rig runs stable to keep the temps down (undervolting).
The amount of watts only come in when the system is being used heavily when gaming or benching.
Its the same as with a 1000 watt PSU, thats not constantly drawing 1000 watts either now is it? ;)
It just CAN supply that much if needed.
ALso here is where my logic gets twisted:
you: 4,2 ghz in turbo mode @ 1,2 volts constantly
me: 4,2 ghz constantly @ 1,16 volts constantly
This while your CPU is the more power efficient one, yet its set to higher volts even in idle.
Do you see my point?
And yes i know your CPU is different than mine but the basics of undervolting are the same,
and since yours is more power efficient it should be able to run alot lower on the volts tbh.
My CPU actually clocks down in idle as well but not as much as the hasswell does tho:
I do have the turbo voltage stuff on auto tho, since my volts are set to the lowest to be stable so it does make sence to give it a bit more when being used.
Still we are talking about a 0.04 vlts extra.
In the end whatever (you think) works best for you is the way to go tho.
It's ur rig in the end :)
